Prostate Cancer Prevention: New Views

Women have to worry about breast cancer prevention, cervical cancer prevention and a myriad of other diseases directly related to the female body and reproductive syndrome. Men are not left out of this need to worry about their internal system's health. Cures and tips abound for developing antibodies for cancer protections but first many men need to become educated on a very real problem and that is prostate cancer prevention.

Prostate cancer has just recently come to light as a growing awareness within the male reproductive system. The prostrate is a small organ located in the male rectum and helps produce seminal fluid. The most common reference heard regarding the prostate is when it becomes enlarged and urination becomes difficult due to the location the prostate is found.

Each year during a routine physical, the attending physician will check the prostate for any irregularities or abnormal size. This yearly physical, besides looking for other health problems, is essential in prostate cancer prevention. Just as in any cancer, early detection is the key to increasing the odds for survival.

Unfortunately scientists and the medical field are not entirely certain on what causes the development of prostate cancer. There are risk factors that do play into the likelihood of developing cancer but it is still unsure of why some men with high risk factors never develop prostate cancer and yet there are some men with very low risk factors that do develop cancer of the prostate.

Cancer prevention is not an exact science. There are risk factors that are generally taken into account when discussing prostate cancer prevention. Family history, race, age and even diet play an important part when speaking with a health care professional. It is important to remember though that there are still unknown factors that the scientific communities along with medical researchers are trying to discover.

While there might not be a full proof plan for prostate cancer prevention there are some symptoms to be aware of. Note: not every patient has symptoms of prostate cancer and indeed some of the symptoms are the same as other health problems. It is important to discuss any symptoms or problems with a health care professional as soon as possible.

Symptoms of prostate cancer can include: difficulty urinating, not being able to control the urine stream, problems with erections or blood in the urine and/or semen. Any of these symptoms or signs of pain in the groin region should be immediately brought to the attention of a physician.

If there is a diagnosis of prostate cancer, all hope is not lost. There are successful treatment options available as well as many effective means for pain control. It is understandable and expected to be frightened of a cancer diagnosis. A second opinion and a detailed treatment plan is a personal right and should be exercised.

Treatment plans can range from surgery to radiation therapy. As with any cancer treatment program there are side effects. These will vary depending on which treatment option is undertaken. The physician can detail the pros and cons of each treatment plan depending on the level of cancer, if it has spread to other organs or how early it is detected.
